1. палата представителей (нижняя палата федерального парламента { Federal Parliament} Австралии. Конституцией Австралии предусматривается, что численность членов палаты представителей вдвое превосходит число членов высшей палаты парламента – сената { Senate}. От каждого штата депутаты избираются пропорционально численности населения. В 1991–92 гг. общее количество мест в палате представителей составило 147. Из них 50 – Новый Южный Уэльс, 38 – Виктория, 25 – Квинсленд, 12 – Южная Австралия, 14 – Западная Австралия, 5 – Тасмания, 2 – Территория федеральной столицы и 1 – Северная Территория. Выборы проводятся не реже 1 раза в три года на основе всеобщего избирательного права. Участие в выборах обязательное для достигших возраста 18 лет.
